CPRE’s Devon’s Best Kept Churchyard Entry Information

Winners 2023 -

The results of Devon CPRE's Best Churchyard Competition 2023 were revealed in October at the charity's AGM at RHS Rosemoor.

This video includes reactions from the winning churchyard - St Michael's, Alphington - and the joint runners-up - St John the Baptist, Bishops Tawton and St Mary's, Dunsford.

The awards were announced by Head Judge, Devon CPRE trustee, Ivan Buxton and presented by Selaine Saxby MP.

“Devon’s churchyards are often at the heart of communities and their upkeep and maintenance rely on the hard work of volunteers. We hope our annual awards go some way towards recognising all they do and saying thank you.” Congratulations to them all.

What is a Flower Day?

People seem to like the idea but maybe not know how we see it.

It’s an idea picked up in Newfoundland, Canada. Once every year families gather and, after a service, go to the Churchyard and tend family graves and lay flowers..  It’s a good opportunity to meet friends, neighbours and more distant relatives who maybe haven’t been seen since the last time. It helps keep memories and community alive.
